Remember: Make it part of the lore that we cannot be responsible for sharing information about a potentially dangerous cave esp when it’s on private property, etc (however you wanna word it!)

  • October 29th 2007 Bill Walden shares this PSA:
Great Rock Sink is closed to sport cavers. Period.
The property is being posted with no trespassing signs and cave protection signs. The owner Mr. Lynne Haynes wants to keep people out of the cave. He has been experiencing problems with spelunkers entering and exiting without having asked permission. He has been confronting groups who have been going to or exiting from the Great Rock Sink Entrance. Mr. Haynes owns the entrance and the surrounding land. Please respect the land owner.
For years most of us have assumed the entrance is on US Army Corps of Engineers land. It is not. The Corps of Engineers has an easement to the current water level of Lake Cumberland -- what ever that water level is. At the moment the water level is well inside the cave.
Several of us met with Mr. Haynes yesterday to discuss the situation. As a result of the meeting on his front porch yesterday, cavers who have a genuine interest in doing scientific work, surveying, or other valid cave study can obtain written permission to enter the cave. Cavers must personally advise Mr. Haynes when they are entering the cave. If you are interested in doing work in the cave, please contact me or Hilary Lambert and we will put you in touch with Mr. Haynes.
Under no circumstances should cavers enter or exit Great Rock Sink without first having obtained permission from Mr. Haynes!

  • FROM THE COURRIER JOURNAL:
TATEVILLE, Ky. — A man slipped into a deep pit and was killed Wednesday while exploring a treacherous southeastern Kentucky cave, officials said.
Crews worked for hours to recover the body of Steven Troxell, 21, who died of blunt force trauma, said Pulaski County Coroner Richard New.
Troxell and two companions were walking inside the Sloans Valley Cave when he fell into the cone-shaped, 30-foot-deep pit. His companions called 911 about 3 p.m., officials said. The coroner said the three were not experienced cavers.
The opening to the cave is located on private property, and it was not clear whether the owners were aware anyone was exploring it, New said.
Troxell's body was found about three-quarters of a mile inside the cave, which is part of a system that meanders about 25 miles beneath private and public lands in a part of Kentucky known for its outdoor recreation. The system is one of the longest in the world.
“It's probably one of the most treacherous caves in the county and probably in the cave system,” New said.
  • NOTE: Pretty sure he died on the 16th and the reporting came out the next day, just in case you see December 17th listed anywhere (but still verify)

Thought this would be a good place to start since 2026 would mark the upcoming 20th anniversary of ANY of these stories!
